Let’s face it, shakes are easy convenient and great fast food for us with our busy lives, but when it comes to choosing which is the best protein powder for hypothyroidism, I was at a loss. Sure it is easy to hit Wally World and pick up the generic protein powder that is relatively cheap; the question is, however, is that really going to help you accomplish your goal to feel better?
In researching protein powders I have discovered that there are actually quite a few choices!
Some protein powders are way better than others when it comes to hypothyroidism.
There are vegan or whey choices. Whey is the by product of making cheese, it is the milky substance left behind when you separate the curds out of the milk. That is the clumpy part of milk when it is separated. Love to use that when I make bread after making cheese. It is made by spraying the whey into big dehydrating vats so all of the water is removed leaving only the powdered whey that is incorporated into a variety of products on the market to day including protein powder.
Whey is therefore considered non vegan because it is created as a by product of an animal, namely milk. Unlike soy isolate protein, Whey protein has been shown to help develop muscle. Muscle burns fat. We want to build muscle. Also, loose fat in order to keep and/or get our thyroids to work properly. Being over weight stresses out the thyroid and causes further damage and further weight gain. Rather a viscous cycle don’t you think?
Whey protein powder might be a good alternative for you if you are not allergic to milk or dairy products. Though many of those of us who suffer from hypothyroidism tend to be allergic to dairy too.
A good quality Whey protein powder for hypothyroidism is Naked Oats and Whey. This is highly rated. It has no artificial sugars added and has a large amount of protein. Many people who have reviewed it are saying that they have lost weight using this as a meal supplement.
Oats are on the gluten list so if you are trying to eliminate gluten from your diet then this is not the protein powder for you.
Then there are a variety of vegan protein powders. Soy isolate protein is definitely out when it comes to hypothyroidism, as it is clearly a thyroid disruptor. Soy isolate protein powder hasn’t been found to do much for muscle building, or weight loss either. And then there is always the Monsanto factor. Most of the soy produced in the US is genetically modified.
